Employment Sectors
A diverse economic base helps a region withstand changes in any one sector, and a favorable balance can help support the growth of quality, high-wage jobs. South Florida's economy is dominated by four industries-trade, transportation and utilities, education and health services, professional and business services, and leisure and hospitality. Unfortunately, three of the four are low-paying sectors. Job growth through 2012 is projected to continue in these four sectors. The occupations that will offer the most new work in the region will pay between $6 and $12 an hour. Some higher paying jobs, e.g. teachers and registered nurses, will also be high growth areas. It will become paramount in the next few years to expand the economy and build on our strength in bioscience research and international trade. |
